Your vehicle, the modern Kia EV2, is equipped with advanced pretensioner seat belts for the front driver and passenger, as well as the second-row outboard passengers (excluding the centre seating position), ensuring maximum safety.
The core purpose of the pretensioner mechanism is to make sure that the seat belt fits tightly and securely against the occupant’s body fractions of a second before or during certain severe collisions.
The pretensioner seat belts may activate automatically in crashes where the collision severity exceeds the specified threshold, minimizing forward body displacement.
When the vehicle stops suddenly during harsh braking, or if the occupant tries to lean forward too quickly, the standard seat belt retractor will lock into position. However, in certain frontal collisions, the pyrotechnic pretensioner will activate instantaneously and pull the seat belt into tighter contact against the occupant’s body.
Retractor Pre-tensioner
The primary purpose of the retractor pre-tensioner in your Kia EV2 is to make sure that the shoulder belts fit in tightly and securely against the occupant's upper body in certain frontal collisions, preventing upper torso lurching.
EFD (Emergency Fastening Device)
The purpose of the EFD is to make sure that the pelvis lap belts fit in tightly and securely against the occupant's lower body in certain frontal collisions, anchoring the hips firmly to the seat cushion.
If the sophisticated electronic system senses excessive tension or load on the front driver, front passenger, and rear passenger seat belts (except centre) when the pretensioner system activates, the integrated load limiter inside the retractor pretensioner will release some of the pressure on the affected seat belt to mitigate rib or chest injuries.
WARNING
For your personal safety, always be sure that the seat belt webbing is never loose or twisted, and always maintain an upright, proper seating posture against the seatback.
TIP
The pretensioner system in your Kia EV2 may activate in both a severe frontal collision or a side collision if the vehicle is equipped with active side or curtain air bags.

CAUTION
Skin irritation
Wash all exposed skin areas thoroughly with soap and water after an accident in which the pretensioner seat belts were deployed. The fine residual dust resulting from the pyrotechnic pretensioner activation may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled continuously for prolonged periods.
TIP
Both the driver’s and front passenger’s seat belt pretensioner systems in your Kia EV2 may be activated not only in certain frontal impacts, but also during severe side impacts or vehicle rollovers when equipped with side and curtain air bags.
Because the electronic sensor that commands the SRS air bag is interconnected with the pretensioner seat belt circuit, the SRS air bag warning light
on the instrument panel will illuminate for approximately 3–6 seconds after the vehicle has been turned to the POWER ON or DRIVE READY position, after which it should automatically turn off.
If the pretensioner seat belt system encounters a fault, this warning light will appear even if there is no separate malfunction with the SRS air bag module. If the SRS air bag warning light does not appear when the vehicle is turned to the POWER ON or DRIVE READY position, remains illuminated for longer than normal, or lights up whilst driving, have an authorised Kia dealer or service partner inspect the pretensioner seat belt and SRS air bag systems as soon as possible.
WARNING
Do not attempt to service, dismantle, or repair the pretensioner seat belt system in any manner. Never attempt to inspect or replace the pretensioner assemblies yourself. Always have your vehicle inspected by a professional workshop; Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or qualified service partner.
CAUTION
Hot pretensioner
Do not touch the metal pretensioner seat belt assemblies or surrounding housings for several minutes after they have been deployed. When the internal pyrotechnic charge fires during a collision, the pretensioner mechanism becomes extremely hot and can cause severe thermal burns.
Pretensioners are strictly designed to operate only once during a vehicle's lifecycle. Following an activation event, deployed pretensioner seat belts must be completely replaced. Always have your Kia EV2 inspected and serviced by a professional workshop, and Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or certified service partner.
