Kia EV2: Seat belt restraint system / Driver’s seat belt misuse warning

Kia EV2 (QV1, 2026-2026) Owner's Manual / Seating and safety restraints / Seat belts / Seat belt restraint system / Driver’s seat belt misuse warning

Your Kia EV2 is equipped with an advanced driver safety monitoring system designed to detect improper restraint configuration and prevent hazardous driving habits. The system operates dynamically based on vehicle speed and buckle status:

If the driver’s seat belt is misused while driving and the vehicle’s speed is below approximately 20 km/h (12mph), the warning light illuminates to alert you of the incorrect restraint status.

If the vehicle’s speed is above approximately 20 km/h (12mph) and the seat belt is misused while driving, the warning light (flashing), warning sound, and a warning message will operate for approximately 100 seconds to ensure immediate corrective action.

After that, the warning light will continue to stay illuminated until the seat belt is fastened correctly.

NOTE

Pressing the OK button on the steering wheel or dashboard message center will stop the warning sound and text message immediately, and the warning light will change from blinking to solidly illuminated until proper belt compliance is restored.

Driver’s seat belt misuse warning may operate under the following circumstances:

  • Seat belt buckle only: Using a fake buckle clip or insert to trick the electronic sensor and activate only the buckle switch without actually wearing the seat belt across your body.

  • Seat belt completely behind back: Wearing both the lap belt and shoulder belt entirely behind the body, bypassing proper structural restraint.

  • Lap belt only: Wearing the lap belt properly across the pelvis while incorrectly placing the upper shoulder strap behind the body.

Limitations of Driver’s seat belt misuse warning

The Driver’s seat belt misuse warning system in your Kia EV2 may not operate properly or may occasionally trigger unexpected alerts under the following circumstances:

  • The driver’s seat belt is covered by heavy winter clothing, bulky jackets, or other objects, preventing the integrated monitoring sensors from accurately recognizing the correct seat belt routing and tension across your chest.

  • When the driver performs sudden upper-body movements, stretches, or postural shifts while the seat belt is worn correctly, the system's intelligent algorithms may temporarily misinterpret such dynamic motions as routing the shoulder belt behind the back.

CAUTION

Driver’s seat belt misuse warning is a supplemental safety feature only designed to assist with vehicle operation. It may not detect every complex type of seat belt circumvention or misuse. It remains the absolute responsibility of the driver to always wear the seat belt correctly and securely regardless of electronic warning system notifications.
