Kia EV2: Driver assistance guide / Emergency Stop (ES): (if equipped)

Emergency Stop is an advanced active safety function designed to assist an unresponsive driver in critical scenarios. If the intelligent monitoring systems of your Kia EV2 determine that the driver has become incapacitated or unresponsive, the system maintains the vehicle securely in the center of the road and actively assists in bringing it to a controlled stop through progressive deceleration.

Detecting sensor

The high-resolution front camera and precision front radar are utilized as primary detection sensors to recognize vehicles and lane boundaries ahead. Please refer to Detecting sensor(s) for the applicable sensor specifications and their precise mounting locations.

CAUTION

Emergency Stop operation

Operational Status

When both Smart Cruise Control and Lane Following Assist are actively engaged on your Kia EV2, the Emergency Stop function stands ready to operate.

NOTE

• This active operational scope includes the utilization of Smart Cruise Control within Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control and Highway Driving Assist modes.

• For detailed information on Smart Cruise Control, Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control, Lane Following Assist, and Highway Driving Assist, refer to Smart Cruise Control (SCC), Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Highway Driving Assist (HDA).

• Even if the Forward Attention Warning function is temporarily deactivated, the Kia EV2 system will diligently monitor driver attentiveness when preparing for an Emergency Stop sequence. For detailed information on the driver monitoring system, refer to Limitations of Forward Attention Warning.

• If the Forward Attention Warning feature is equipped and an unexpected malfunction occurs with the interior cabin camera, Lane Following Assist cannot be activated.

• If the driver unfastens their seat belt whilst driving at speeds of 20 km/h (10 mph) or higher, Lane Following Assist will automatically disengage.

• Lane Following Assist cannot be activated if the driver is not properly wearing a seat belt.

Emergency Stop forewarning and Deceleration Control

If a persistent Hands-Off warning continues without driver response, the Kia EV2 system interprets this state as driver unresponsiveness.

When driver unresponsiveness is detected, the system issues an immediate forewarning through an explicit warning message on the instrument cluster, an audible warning sound, and distinct steering wheel vibration.

Take control of the vehicle immediately.

If the forewarning continues without intervention, active steering control and targeted deceleration control are activated to help bring the Kia EV2 to a safe, controlled stop entirely within its current lane. The system clearly indicates that Emergency Stop is actively in progress via a dedicated warning message, continuous warning sound, flashing hazard warning lights, and steering wheel vibration.

Take control of the vehicle immediately. Vehicle is stopping.

Forewarning and Emergency Stop execution will be cancelled promptly in the following situations:

• The driver looks forward attentively and firmly holds the steering wheel to resume manual operation of the vehicle

• Smart Cruise Control is temporarily deactivated or turned off entirely

• Lane Following Assist is turned off

NOTE

• During active Emergency Stop operation, the Smart Cruise Control following distance is automatically set and displayed at level 4. Once Emergency Stop is cancelled, it gracefully returns to the previously configured value.

• This behavior includes the operation of Smart Cruise Control based on navigation data and Highway Driving Assist.

• The system utilizes forward inattention data captured by the interior cabin camera (if equipped). For detailed information regarding the interior camera, refer to Forward Attention Warning (FAW).

Stop

If your Kia EV2 successfully comes to a complete stop via the Emergency Stop function, clear warning messages, repetitive warning sounds, and active hazard warning flashers will continue to alert surrounding traffic.

Following this complete halt, the vehicle will automatically execute the following safety procedures:

• Automatic door unlock

• SOS Call connect: (if equipped)

• EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) applied

• Automatic shift to the P (Park) position.

Release

Emergency Stop will release and deactivate when the following specific conditions are fully satisfied.

Drive carefully

• The driver focuses clearly on the road ahead and takes full control of the steering wheel

• If the accelerator pedal is strongly engaged and maintained by the driver

• If the brake pedal is firmly engaged

• If the Lane Following Assist button ( ) is pressed

• If the dedicated Driver Assistance button on the dashboard is pressed

• The hazard warning flasher button is pressed after the vehicle has come to a full stop.

• Either front seat door (driver or front passenger) is opened.

• The driver manually cancels an active SOS emergency call (if the function is provided).

• Shifting the gear selector out of P (Park) into another driving gear.

CAUTION

After the Kia EV2 comes to a complete halt due to an Emergency Stop event, you will need to restart the vehicle before you can re-activate Lane Following Assist or Highway Driving Assist.

When the Emergency Stop system is not working properly, a specific warning message and the Master warning light ( ) will appear on the instrument cluster. If this unexpected behavior occurs, have your vehicle thoroughly inspected by a professional service workshop. Kia strongly recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or certified service partner.
