Jump starting

Connect the cables in the numerical order shown in the following image (and disconnect them in the reverse order):

Jump starting can be dangerous if done incorrectly. To avoid harm to yourself or damage to your vehicle or battery, follow the comprehensive safety and operational procedures outlined in this section to ensure your Kia EV2 gets back on the road safely. If in doubt, have a competent technician or towing service jump start your vehicle.

WARNING

  • Do not attempt to jump start your Kia EV2 if the discharged battery is frozen, as the battery may rupture or explode under electrical load.

  • Never attempt to check the electrolyte level of the battery, as this may cause the battery to rupture or explode unexpectedly.

  • Keep all flames or sparks away from the battery. The battery produces hydrogen gas, which may cause a severe explosion if it is exposed to flame or sparks.

If you do not follow these instructions exactly, serious personal injury and permanent damage to the vehicle may occur. If you are not sure how to follow this procedure, seek qualified professional assistance immediately. Automobile batteries contain sulfuric acid, which is poisonous and highly corrosive. When jump starting your Kia EV2, wear protective glasses and be careful not to get acid on yourself, your clothing, or any painted vehicle surfaces.

  • Do not attempt to jump start the vehicle if the discharged battery is frozen or if the internal electrolyte level is critically low, as the battery may rupture or violently explode.

  • Do not allow the positive (+) and negative (-) jumper cables to touch each other at any point during the process, as this will cause dangerous electrical sparks.

  • Do not connect the jumper cable directly from the negative terminal of the booster battery to the negative terminal of the discharged battery. This improper connection can cause the discharged battery to overheat, crack, or degrade structurally. Instead, connect one end of the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery, and the other end to a secure metallic grounding point far away from the battery.

  • Automobile batteries contain hazardous sulfuric acid. When jump starting your Kia EV2, take extreme care not to spill or splash sulfuric acid on your skin, your clothing, or the vehicle bodywork, because this acid is poisonous and highly corrosive.

NOTE

Use only a 12V external jumper system or power source. You can damage a 12V starting motor, ignition system, onboard computers, and other sensitive electrical parts beyond repair by using an incorrect 24V power supply, whether through two 12V batteries connected in series or a heavy-duty 24V motor generator set.

Jump starting instructions

  1. Make sure the booster battery is a standard 12V unit and that its negative terminal is properly grounded to its chassis.

If the booster battery is housed inside another donor vehicle, make sure that the two vehicles do not come into physical contact with each other during the procedure.

  2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads, interior accessories, and climate systems on your Kia EV2 before proceeding.

  3. Connect the heavy-duty jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the following visual illustration:

Step-by-step schematic diagram showing positive and negative jumper cable terminal hookups for the Kia EV2
    1. Connect one end of a jumper cable securely to the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery (marked as 3).

    2. Connect the other end of that same jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the external booster battery (marked as 1).

    3. Connect one end of the second jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery (marked as 2).

    4. Connect the other end of that second jumper cable to a proper engine ground: a solid, stationary, unpainted metallic point located safely away from the battery itself (marked as 4).

Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything except the correct designated battery terminals or the verified electrical ground. Do not lean directly over the battery when connecting or adjusting the jumper cables.

  4. If you have connected the jumper cables to another vehicle, start the engine of the donor vehicle containing the booster battery first and let it run for a few minutes.

  5. Start the engine or power system of your Kia EV2 containing the previously discharged battery.

  6. Once your Kia EV2 successfully starts up, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the exact reverse order of connection: first disconnect the negative cable end from the engine ground or booster negative terminal, then disconnect the positive cables from both the booster battery (1) and your vehicle's battery (3).

If it is not completely obvious why your battery went flat or discharged unexpectedly, have your vehicle inspected thoroughly by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or certified service partner for diagnostics.

Push starting

The modern Kia EV2 equipped with a reduction gear or electric drive reducer must never be push-started under any circumstances; only safe electrical jump starting can be applied.

Strictly follow all safety instructions and sequences provided in the Jump starting section of this manual.

WARNING

Tow starting the vehicle

Never attempt to tow your Kia EV2 to start it. When the vehicle suddenly powers up or engages during a tow start, it can lurch forward unexpectedly and collide forcefully with the vehicle that is towing it, creating a severe safety hazard.
