Kia EV2: Steering wheel / Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS)

The Motor Driven Power Steering system in your Kia EV2 utilizes an advanced electric motor to seamlessly assist you in steering the vehicle with minimal physical effort.

If the vehicle ignition is turned off or if the power steering assist system encounters an unexpected interruption, you can still manually steer the Kia EV2, though doing so will require significantly increased steering effort.

The electronic power steering control unit continuously monitors steering wheel torque inputs and vehicle speed parameters to precisely command the electric assist motor, ensuring optimal handling characteristics.

To provide superior control and stability on the road, the steering effort automatically becomes firmer and heavier as the vehicle accelerates to higher speeds, while becoming noticeably lighter during low-speed maneuvers such as parking.

Should you observe any unusual stiffness, delay, or irregular changes in the effort required to steer your Kia EV2 during routine driving, have the system thoroughly evaluated by a certified specialist. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or authorized service partner.

NOTE

You may experience the following normal operational behaviors under routine driving conditions:

• When the EV button is shifted to the POWER ON or DRIVE READY position, the steering wheel enters standard operating mode after completing a brief self-diagnosis of the MDPS system lasting approximately 3 seconds.

• A faint electronic click sound may be heard coming from the MDPS relay whenever you transition the EV button into the POWER ON, DRIVE READY, or OFF position.

• A mild operational noise may be noticeable when turning the steering wheel while the Kia EV2 is completely stationary or navigating tight spaces at very low speeds.

• If the MDPS system experiences an operational irregularity, a warning indicator will illuminate or flash on the instrument cluster display. If power assistance is lost, greater physical force will be required to turn the wheel.

• Steering while operating in extremely cold ambient temperatures may temporarily require more effort and produce slight mechanical sounds until cabin and component temperatures return to normal levels.

• If the charging system warning light illuminates due to low battery voltage or a charging system malfunction, power steering assistance may be temporarily restricted, requiring increased steering force.

• Following a jump start after a depleted battery discharge, the steering wheel may not respond with full assistance immediately. This temporary state resolves itself once the battery regains a stable charge; always cycle the steering wheel fully from lock to lock to confirm normal operation before driving your Kia EV2.

TIP

If the steering wheel is held against the extreme lock or worked continuously for an extended period, the built-in overcurrent protection circuit will engage to prevent overheating, temporarily increasing steering effort. This is a safety feature, not a malfunction, and normal operation will resume automatically shortly after.

WARNING

If the MDPS system fails completely or an error code is triggered, the warning indicator on the instrument panel will light up or blink, and steering will become heavy. Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands and apply extra physical force to maintain control.
